Health Hub
CWC creates programs based on cultural health practices, such as the “Healthy Powderhorn” program and the Community Health Hub programs, as well as programs focused on adding to the professional knowledge of health care and social service specialists through the “Invisible College”.
The objectives of the Cultural Health Practices programs that the CWC creates are:
-
Reconnecting communities and people to their heritage.
-
Providing education relating to lifestyle practices, including instructions and resources for diet, nutrition and exercise
-
Restoring and maintaining harmony
Community Health Hub
The Community Health Hub emerged from the 10-year Backyard Initiative, a former partnership between South-Side Minneapolis Community Residents, Allina Health, and the Cultural Wellness Center.
Through the Community Health Hub, the CWC leverages connectedness and cultural practice to better serve communities, build local capacity, and reflect community culture and values in the pursuit.
Engage
We engage people in using culture as a resource for taking responsibility for their health and well-being.
Our goal is to ignite and inspire people to act on their own behalf.
Connect
We reconnect people to their culture and communities, honoring life experiences and building communities where every person’s culture and knowledge is valued
Participate
We help people to heal and strengthen themselves and our community through workshops, training, mentorship, healing circles, and community events and health activities in the pursuit of wellness.
The Community Health Hub focuses on activities designed to improve four health indicators:
-
Social Support
-
Social Cohesion
-
Health Education
-
Health Empowerment
The Community Health Hub activities contain five elements or conditions that lead to improved health:
-
Connecting with others by gaining an understanding about people where they wouldn’t normally meet, sharing stories and conversations, and fostering a sense of belonging.
-
Learning together, by developing new skills and sharing useful information.
-
Seeing results through better health and seeing their life and others’ lives improve.
-
Gathering in a healing environment, with positive energy, people modeling health and healthy behaviors, community support, and the sharing of meals.
-
Giving back, by taking action and having an outlet for their passion and commitment
The Community Health Hub classes focus on fun activities that can improve one’s health. Form Walking to Stepping into Wellness, from Zumba to biking, our classes offer an array of opportunities to improve well-being, while also providing the opportunity to speak with healthcare professionals about healthcare goals and monitoring progress to ensure improvement.
